Is your pet's ashes sitting in a closet? You are not alone.
Losing a four-legged family member is one of the hardest moments in life. Once the decision for cremation is made and the initial shock subsides, you are faced with the next step: What do you do with the ashes of a beloved dog or cat?
Many people have an image of immediately burying the ashes in the garden or scattering them in a favorite forest. But reality often looks completely different. It is incredibly common for the ashes of a dog or cat to end up sitting in its impersonal standard cardboard box on a shelf, in a closet, or on a mantelpiece – sometimes for months, or even years.
If you feel guilty about the ashes just sitting there, you shouldn't. Here is why this happens so often, and how you can transform that storage into a warm, meaningful ritual.
Why do pet ashes end up tucked away?
When you collect the ashes from the pet crematorium or veterinarian, they are usually delivered in a simple cardboard cylinder or plastic container. Burying it in the cold ground can feel permanent, harsh, and lonely. Many pet owners subconsciously feel like they are "discarding" their companion by burying them outside.
As a result, the ash box gets moved around the house. It ends up on a hallway shelf, at the back of a cabinet, or hidden behind some books. This doesn't happen because the love has faded, but because there is a lack of a dignified way to keep your pet close in daily life. Hiding the ashes becomes a coping mechanism for grief, but it often leaves behind a nagging feeling of guilt.
Keeping pet ashes indoors – creating a living memorial
There is no right or wrong way to grieve a pet. Wanting to keep your dog or cat indoors, right where they always belonged, is a beautiful way to honor their memory. Your friend was a part of your daily life and your home – it is completely natural to want to keep it that way.
By moving the ashes from the temporary transport packaging into a beautiful, handmade ceramic pet urn, you can create a permanent memorial space right in the center of your home. Instead of hiding the grief away, you integrate it into your decor as a symbol of the love that remains.
A ritual to keep the memory alive
When I created the ceramic urn NÄRA, it was born out of my own grief after losing my dog, Bosse. His ashes needed a worthy place. The concept behind NÄRA is unique: the lid of the urn is designed to function as a candle holder for a classic taper candle.
This transforms a static storage object into a living, active ritual:
* A moment of reflection: Whenever the longing feels heavy, you can light a candle on the lid of the urn, pause, and remember your friend.
* A part of your home: The urn is discreet, sculptural, and wheel-thrown in genuine stoneware to blend seamlessly onto your mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf.
* A gentle transition: The urn comes with a carefully sewn linen drawstring bag. Pouring the ashes into a soft cloth bag often feels much easier and gentler on the heart than handling raw ceramics or plastic.
* A personal touch: I engrave the pet's name and years of life directly into the lid, making each urn a completely unique piece of art dedicated solely to your friend.
You don’t need to rush this decision
Whether your dog or cat’s ashes have been sitting in a cabinet since last month or since 2012 does not matter. Grief has no expiration date, and it is never too late to give your companion the memorial they deserve.
Let the ashes come out of the closet and into the light. This is not about holding onto death – it is about celebrating a living memory and the warmth your best friend brought into your life every single day.
